I have a client who has some products she would like to sell on Amazon. The producer of these products packages them with the sellers name on the bag, but there is no UPC code. Products that a seller repackages or produces need UPC codes before they can be sold through a marketplace such as Amazon. It turns out there are organizations, such as GS1, where sellers can secure UPC codes for their products, a fee. Each rendering of a product (color, packaging size, etc) needs it’s own UPC code. The code will be tied to the seller as well as the product. For example up to 10 bar codes can be secured from GS1 for $250 initiation fee and $50/year. Definitely something to consider it you want to sell with the big guys.
